In the
1800's Cable Bay was the site of landfall of the first telecommunication
cable between Australia and New Zealand and was the site of the cable
station settlement. Since early 2001, Cable Bay hosts a new a fibre-optic
submarine cable, linking the North and South Islands. An information
board is located on the beginning of the Walkway.
